History at St. Bernadette’s Primary School aims to ensure that our children will leave school with a secure understanding of the chronology of British history and that of the wider world. Through our topics, we aim to provide interesting and exciting historical experiences, which promote historical thinking; developing an appreciation of the past
and ensuring children become analytic thinkers by evaluating a range of primary and secondary sources. A question-focused approach will encourage our children to ask questions, weigh evidence, scrutinise arguments and develop their own judgement of historical periods. Our curriculum has been carefully planned and structured so there
is a clear progression of knowledge, skills and understanding. Our curriculum will allow our children to become curious learners, developing a deep understanding of the historical concepts taught and they will be able to build upon their prior knowledge.

Our History Subject Leader is Miss Burns.

“As History Lead, I’m passionate about helping our children explore the rich tapestry of the past and how this shapes our present. History is not just about dates and facts; it’s about learning from the mistakes and triumphs of those who came before us. It is my goal that through history, our children will be reminded that Jesus is the light of our lives, guiding us to learn, grow, and understand the world with wisdom and compassion. In our lessons, our children engage deeply with primary and secondary sources, analysing and assessing evidence to uncover the stories of the past and consider the lived, human experiences of those who came before us.  I believe that by exploring these different perspectives, they can develop critical thinking skills, empathy, and a more nuanced understanding of the world around them. History helps children become well-rounded individuals who can appreciate diverse cultures, reflect on the lessons of the past, and use their understanding to navigate their own lives with wisdom and compassion.” Miss Burns.
