At St. Bernadette’s, it is our intent that learning a foreign language helps to develop an awareness and appreciation of cultural and linguistic diversity. It is an entitlement as part of an engaging, rich and broad curriculum, which fosters children’s curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world as global citizens.
We believe that the early acquisition of a foreign language at primary school helps to develop a positive attitude towards language learning and provides the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
The teaching should enable children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.
The school’s aims are to:
  • To foster an interest in learning other languages
  • To embed pupils’ substantive knowledge of a language and its structure, and their understanding that the structure differs from one language to another
  • To ensure progress throughout the school in their disciplinary knowledge through regularly revisiting speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar skills
  • To understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • To speak with increasing confidence and fluency in preparation for transition to KS3.

Our Spanish Subject Leader is Mrs Mills.

“As a leader in Spanish learning, my passion for languages drives me to inspire others in their language journey. I studied Spanish at degree level and I have developed a deep love for the language, its rich culture, and the vibrant countries where it is spoken. I believe that learning a second language opens doors to new perspectives, creating stronger connections with people from diverse backgrounds. Spanish, with its global influence, offers endless opportunities for personal and professional growth, and I am dedicated to helping others unlock its full potential.”- Mrs Mills
