At St Bernadette’s, we strive for a Geography curriculum that inspires our children to be curious and passionate geographers. We encourage children to explore and ask questions about the people and world around them, to develop their knowledge and understanding of human and physical features, alongside learning new skills. We believe that making these connections empowers our children to recognise world-wide challenges and appreciate their role in ensuring a sustainable future.

Our children begin learning about Geography in early years and content is carefully designed, to be engaging, accessible and inclusive. Each key stage builds on previous skills and knowledge to ensure progress, as children journey through the school and develop a love for geography.

We make connections through a topic based, cross-curricular approach and look for opportunities to take learning outside, allowing children to travel the world from their classroom and get practical real-life experiences. Children are made aware of Geography as a discrete subject to help them understand what it is, and the skills they are learning. We deepen knowledge by linking and revisiting areas of learning across topics, so that children will remember more, know more, and understand more.

Our Geography Subject Leader is Mrs Hallsworth.

“I have always enjoyed travelling and exploring new places. I have been lucky enough to spend a great deal of time experiencing both city and countryside environments, which has helped to shape my interest in Geography. Growing up with access to the rich cultural life of the city alongside time spent in natural landscapes has given me a strong appreciation for how people and environments interact.

I studied Geography at GCSE, and it remains one of my favourite subjects to learn about and teach. I particularly enjoy learning about different cultures, languages, and the physical and human features that make countries and places unique. Geography offers endless opportunities to develop curiosity about the world and understand the connections between people, places and the environment.
As Geography Lead, I am passionate about helping children explore and understand the world around them. We want our pupils to become confident mini‑geographers by providing engaging, immersive learning experiences and opportunities to carry out meaningful fieldwork. These experiences help to build a strong geographical knowledge base while developing key skills such as enquiry, observation and critical thinking.
Our aim is to nurture positive global citizens who respect different cultures and environments and understand the importance of caring for our planet. Geography opens the door to many future pathways, including roles as travellers, planners, architects, scientists, economists and decision‑makers. Learning about the world equips children with a sense of curiosity and responsibility, empowering them to understand, shape and protect the world they live in.” Mrs Hallsworth
